American whiskeys are often mainly made from maize (corn), in which case they are called bourbon. Other ingredients are rye, wheat and barley.

Maize softens the flavour, and ageing in new, charred oak casks lends vanilla notes to these whiskeys. You can also discern fruity, banana, apricot and spicy notes in American whiskeys.

American whiskeys are served in mixed drinks, with a dash of water and on the rocks.

Enjoying whisky with soda water or a soft drink is common all over the world. Whiskey on the rocks is so cold it can numb your taste buds, but it is still the favourite of many people. Bourbon can also be used to make classic drinks, such as Whiskey Sour or Mint Julep.

American whiskey is served at room temperature.

The US whiskey industry is concentrated in two states, Kentucky and Tennessee.
