Responsibility management at Alko
Responsibility is managed in three areas in line with Alko’s strategy:
- Community, Taking care of wellbeing
- Environment, Sustainable consumption
- Together, Act and make a difference
These areas cover all of Alko’s activities and are based on the company’s special mandate to sell alcohol in a responsible manner so as to reduce its harmful effects.
Responsible operations that are developed in a goal-oriented manner
We set long-term strategic objectives for responsibility and draw up an annual action plan to support the achievement of these goals. The Management Team reviews responsibility issues that are of key relevance to the strategy and action plan. The leader of each business unit and support function bears responsibility for operational management. The responsibility working group handles the development projects and measures relating to responsibility.
Alko’s Board of Directors regularly reviews the key responsibility measures that are prepared by the Board’s committees. The Supervisory Board approves the annual plan for strategic responsibility measures and presents a report on the actions carried out during the previous year. The President & CEO reports on the implementation of the responsibility plan to Alko’s General Meeting. The AGM decides on the maximum amount of donations to be granted by the company.
Focusing on what matters has an impact
Alko updated its materiality analysis and reporting practices in 2023. The previous update was in 2021.
Stakeholder studies and other materials prepared for use in Alko’s strategy work were used in the update. In addition, representatives of Alko’s key stakeholders were interviewed and a workshop was held for suppliers.
Alko’s special mandate is to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of alcohol, and stakeholders considered this to be the most material of the responsibility themes. Ensuring human and labour rights in the production chain, mitigating climate change, safeguarding biodiversity, a responsible selection, a responsible employer, ethical, transparent operations and financial responsibility, and promoting the circular economy were also considered material themes.
Responsibility communications make stakeholders aware of our strategically important themes
We create awareness of our responsibility efforts through marketing campaigns in a variety of channels. Our aim is to increase stakeholders’ awareness of Alko’s responsibility efforts and the support services provided by our partners. The campaigns also enable our staff to see the practical implementation of these efforts, which makes their work more meaningful.
