Nordic alcohol monopolies aim to halve emissions of value chain
Alko, together with other Nordic monopolies, is committed to halving the climate emissions of value chain by the end of 2030.
The Nordic alcohol monopolies have created a common environmental roadmap, which has been signed by the CEOs of the monopolies in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Finland.
The environmental roadmap brings together the common mission, targets, and actions of the Nordic monopolies in one document. For example, monopolies are committed to the goal of halving emissions throughout our value chain by the end of 2030.
The roadmap brings together the mission, targets, and actions
The mission of the Nordic Environment Group is
- to be forerunner for sustainable development in the beverage business,
- encourage and enable sustainable solutions in the supply chain, and
- inspire out customers to make sustainable choices.
The targets of the roadmap are:
- Working together with the whole supply chain to reduce CO2 footprint by 50% within 2030.
- Minimize negative environmental impact in our value chain.
Achieving these targets requires actions and even closer cooperation with all actors in the supply chain, both producers, suppliers, and alcohol monopolies.
See the environmental roadmap of Nordic alcohol monopolies (pdf).
The goal is impressive, and at the same time challenging
According to Alko's climate impact study, the production of beverages and their packaging accounts for the largest share of total emissions of our value chain. For example, in primary production (ie the cultivation of raw materials) the greatest environmental impacts are caused by energy and fuel consumption during the grape cultivation process. More information about environmental impacts of beverage production here.
The climate crisis is a fact and measures must be taken by all players in the sector to reduce the climate impact of the entire alcohol beverage industry. The targets of Nordic alcohol monopolies enables us to plan unified actions, which increases the effectiveness.
Alko's beverage packaging objective serves the emission target of the value chain
One of Alko's three climate and environmental objectives is to halve the climate emissions caused by beverage packaging by the end of 2030. Our beverage packaging objective is consistent with the common Nordic goals. Work to reduce emissions from beverage packaging serves these goals.
To support and guide the beverage packaging objective, we have drafted a beverage packaging roadmap.
